Publication Path

Instructor: John Vercher

You’ve completed a manuscript! Congratulations! Now what?

The frustrating truth is though it feels like you’ve reached the summit, your journey is only beginning. From finding an agent to landing a deal (and everything in between), the road to publication is one of what can feel like constantly moving goalposts that leave you wondering: ‘Why didn’t anyone tell me about all this?’ It’s a fair question—and we’ll answer it. In this once monthly interactive session, John (and the occasional special guest) will pull back the curtain on his own publishing path. He’ll share his missteps and successes as well as answer your questions to provide you with a flashlight in the forest.

John Vercher is the author of the novels Three-Fifths (Agora Books, 2019) and After the Lights Go Out (Soho Press, 2022). Three-Fifths has been nominated for an Edgar award for Best Debut Novel, an Anthony award for Best First Novel, a Strand Critics’ award, and a Lefty award for Best First Novel. Three-Fifths was named a Best Book of 2019 by the Chicago Tribune, a Best Book of the Week by the New York Post, and a Top 10 Crime Fiction Debut by Booklist, and was shortlisted for the prestigious CWA “John Creasey New Blood” Dagger Award. It has sold internationally, including France, Japan, Spain, Brazil, Germany, China, and the U.K. The novel also received starred reviews from Booklist and the Library Journal, and a cover reveal in Entertainment Weekly online.
