coaching
No whistles. No bullhorns.
Who Hires a Coach?
Not everybody.
This is important to say.
Hiring a writing coach may seem like something of a luxury. After all, there are a lot of resources and options that may provide some, all, or even more support. There are hundreds of billions of writing technique and advice videos on YouTube, writers groups are a thing, excellent books about the subject from a variety of experts are readily available, and we even put out an irregularly scheduled podcast that–when you cut through all of the blah blah–might have a nugget or two of free wisdom.
This is true for a variety of pursuits in the Age of the Internet. Running. Gardening. Home renovation. Whatever you need to learn about, there’s somebody talking about it.
But sometimes it helps to have an advocate in the field with you who is dedicated to evaluating strengths and weaknesses, helps create a detailed plan for achieving a goal, can speak the language of your book fluently because they know characters and motivations, and will commiserate with you on those days when just one more feels like too much. Remember, the word itself comes from the Greek for “co-aching.”*
If you are looking for any or multiple of the following, hiring a coach might be right for you:
- Need accountability
- Want to learn and develop skills
- Target a specific goal like writing a novel
